Mac OS X

I'm counting down the seconds until I get my new powerbook g4 later this week. To kill the time, I found this great web site with tons of OS X hints: macosxhints

Most of of the tips are really UNIX hacks, which I think is awesome. I really bought a UNIX workstation. Here are some of the more useful tips:

Also, here's something else thats' cool. There's an mac equivalent of net stumbler for the PC. It's called MacStumbler. The site also has links to purchase and configure all the gear you need for WarDriving. I wonder what that is?

My powerbook should ship on the 30th. I can't wait.

UNF just deleted my unix account

UNF (the University of North Florida) just deleted my UNIX account. I went in to reset my password, and SIZS0001 is no longer a valid account. I attended UNF from the time I finished Basic Training and Tech School with the Air National Guard until 11 September 2001. After September 11th, I dropped out of UNF and switched to FSU distance learning. After 33 hours earned, I'm much happier at FSU, and distance learning is much more flexible. So long UNF!

After futher research, it seems I've been classified as an inactive student.

I pulled this information from osprey online. I can't believe I wasted this much time getting my AA degree. With work and a family, it's been hard. But UNF and the Florida Air National guard didn't make it any easier! Many times UNF simply didn't have the courses I needed at night. Three times, I had to drop a class because of unexpected commitments with the Florida Air National Guard.

The best thing I ever did was go to FSU! Now I can do my course work even if the Guard activates me. (and they have. Twice since I started FSU.) And as an added bonus, the Florida State Football program has given me several hours of entertainment. Thanks, Scott!

Wow, this was an introspective morning. All because I couldn't log in to my UNIX account.

Across from Cecil Commerce Center

This is the area right across from Cecil Field. This was an old Navy base that housed nuclear weapons. While Cecil Field NAS became cecil commerce center has been open, this area across the street is still off limits. It was pretty fun to ride around there anyway. Its about 3 miles of open road. My bike goes pretty fast on 3 miles of open road.

I finally did it

The waiting paid off: Apple unveils 15-inch PowerBook, updates 17 and 12. Apple just updated their entire powerbook line with DDR memory, 512K L2 cache, and faster processors. I'm so glad I waited.

Returned from 3.0 Off Site Meeting at Palm Coast, FL

This was the view from my hotel room.

I had a great time in Palm Coast. I attended the 3.0 (Logistics) Off Site meeting. Basically the 1st, 2nd and 3rd level supervisors all get together semiannually to discuss management issues off site. This allows the management team to spend a lot of "quality" time together in a setting free of the normal distractions of "the office."

I was ready to go because on Tuesday, I had all the distractions I could take!

Air Force Commendation Medal: Second Award

DSC00061.jpg DSC00656.jpg DSC00663.JPG

This is a pretty prestigious award, and it’s the second time I’ve received it. This time, I was awarded the Air Force Commendation medal for building an ASP website for the Air National Guard Personnel conference.

It’s really nice to be recognized like this, but at the same time I feel pretty guilty about it. I work with some extremely dedicated people that work a lot harder than I do. I get awards and decorations a lot more frequently than they do. I guess the reason why is that everything I do (like web and database apps) are extremely visible. Another thing I have going for me is that I’m a workaholic. I check my ANG email even when I’m not at work. I connect remotely and work from home often. People notice this stuff.

As for the inspection this weekend, it’s really going great. This is because of the all the hard work of my co-workers out there. I hope they get some serious recognition for this one, because they really transformed the Network Control Center (NCC) into something great. I just hope it stays that way, and continues to improve.

This drill weekend with the Air National Guard has been great. Drill weekends sort of feel like family reunions. These people have seen pretty much ever side of me, and we’re really close. A big part of the monthly drill weekend is catching up everything that’s happened in the past month. We talk about work, motorcycles, football, school, and my future career plans. It’s pretty nice. About all else, it’s the reason why I stay in the guard.

Tomorrow is the last day of the September UTA and the UCI inspection. I plan on riding my bike in and staying pretty low key.

Have you seen my baseball?

DSC00646.jpg

Scott came by tonight for Renna's Pizza, Apple Pie, and homemade ice cream. Just a good ole time in small town, USA.

All and all, today was a great day. Except when I lost my data stick. That was really sad. I really love the data stick. I put my files on it. Files like 3 slide power point presentations. Then I use the data stick in high profile meetings, and everyone looks at me like I'm some sort of man from the future. Everyone whats to learn about the data stick. Then I have to talk about the data stick, like I sell them or make them or something. Aren't I special? Jeez, I'm glad I found my data stick.

No upcoming appointments

Today, and I turned on my Dell Axim Pocket PC, and it said: "No upcoming appointments." THIS NEVER HAPPENS! This means I can just work, and then go home, and do nothing. How cool is that?

September 9, 2003

I'm working, but I'm not working for you .... NO!

Today both Scott and Jason were out, so I was the only programmer here. I closed 18 out of 31 bugs in ABC Tracker. It was really pretty fun. Lately my days are spent in meetings our drafting presentations. It was good to see that I could still code!

This weekend is drill weekend with the Florida Air National Guard (FL ANG). Its a big UTA because we're having a Unit Compliance Inspection (UCI). [HIJK LMNOP?] I think I'm going to come out and work on Thursday and Friday before the inspection, just 'cause I care.

OCC T-shirt

DSC00646.jpg
The best thing that happened to me all day was getting my OCC t-shirt in the mail ... or maybe it was the steak dinner Michele made.

At any rate, the best part of the day happened after work. The first day back from a long trip is always really tough.

OKC - Complete Success

DSC00591.jpg DSC00602.jpg
Aside from getting hopelessly lost almost every day, this trip was fun. Scott and I ate lots of steak. Also, I guess its worth mentioning that we got the funds to complete the E-6 EPM and ISPM web apps. What the hell and I talking about? I dunno, but I explained in in 3 slides in powerpoint.

Labor Day

My TiVo is working overtime today. Right now there is an "American Choppers" and "Start Trek: TNG" marathon in progress. American Choppers is ranked higher, so it is recording the eps I've haven't seen in the past month. Next, TiVo records the TNG eps that don't conflict with American Choppers.

This morning I looked for jobs on Monster.com . Looks like I can make 110k if I move to NY. I don't plan on moving until Spring / Summer of 2004, when I finish school at FSU, but it's nice to see what's out there.

I finally got started with my FALL 2003 course work. Looks like a great semester.

Later on today, I'm going on a ride with my brother Scott, and my Dad. Should be fun. Pictures to follow.

Mac Rumor: MAC OS 10.3 Panther should be out in mid October. I wish this OS would just come out so I can buy my first Mac. I've been waiting for 3 months.
