I guess it couldn't last

Yesterday the weather here took a turn for the worse. It’s been awesome since I got here, but it looks like its going to get pretty bad over the next few days. Right now it’s rainy and windy with 50 mph gusts! It really sucks when it rains sideways and hits you in the face. So I guys this is the Iceland everyone warned me about.

Update #1: Looks like its clearing up
Update #2: Raining
Update #3: Looks like its clearing up again
Update #4: I give up ... Iceland

Internet Explorer hates me

I really hate it when simple things get needlessly complicated. Our MOC uses Microsoft Internet Explorer pretty much no stop throughout the day for access to several military web applications. Most of the sites are https.

For some reason, https browsing just stops working randomly. To fix it, I have to launch gpedit.msc to click on disable system cryptology, enable it, and then reboot. I have to do this once a day.

Today the problem got worse, instead of having all https sites break; only one did, and the usual fix didn’t work.

I’m not sure how to fix it. I’d like to re-install IE 6.0, but that’s not going to happen, because the browser is so integrated with windows xp. You could even say the windows XP IS Internet Explorer.

So the fix was to install Mozilla Firefox. I really like the fact that if Firfox breaks, I can simply delete it, and re-install. Its one of many great things about Firefox, you can re-install it.

I’m not trying to sound like one of those Mac switchers that make simple personal computing tasks sound like brain surgery, but in this case a simple task was way too hard!

Work Stuff

The pace at work has finally slowed down. Like I expected, it was really busy for the first few days, but now that almost everything's up and running, I have more time to relax.

The only open issue I have is with the local NCC to allow access to our VPN server. The firewall guys need to open a few ports. That should be done today, and then we'll be in great shape.

Iceland

I made it to Iceland Sunday at 2:00 pm local time (+4), after 6.5 hours in a C-17.

So far this trip has been great. The weather stays around 60 degrees all day. I left the base Sunday evening and saw Keflavik (the town just outside the gate). Iceland is pretty cool really. The locals here are really nice, especially when they find out you're an American in the military. I think Iceland is one of the few places where people like us.

I've stayed pretty busy here at work, but I feel it starting to ease up. It hasn't been too bad. I have to coordinate everything with the Air Force here, which gets old pretty fast!

I'm still not sleeping right. I woke up at 5:30 am on Saturday, and stayed up pretty much non stop until 2:00 am local time on Monday. Between the time change, the flight, and 24 hour daylight, I've kinda lost any sense of time. Hopefully, I can get caught up on my sleep this week.

I plan doing some extensive traveling this weekend. I'll post some pictures soon.

Firefox Extension: Single Window 1.0

My new favorite firefox extension.

Single Window 1.0 can be configured so external links can be set to open in a new tab instead of the currently active tab.

This is really handy when you open URLs from your mail or chat client. Instead of having several browser windows open, you just have open window with several tabs.

Here's how I've configured Single Window 1.0 on my PC.

Alpine: iPod interface coming this Fall

"Apple and BMW's recent "iPod Your BMW" promotion offers a way for owners of recent-model BMW vehicles to interface their iPods with their stereos. But if you don't own a BMW or don't have a compatible model, what are you to do? One solution comes from venerable car audio maker Alpine, which in January announced the development of its Interface Adapter for iPod. With Apple and BMW's recent announcement making the rounds, Alpine recently offered further information about its product, which it now says will ship in the fall."

Patrick Norton's Final Show

Yesterday was Patrick Norton's last live show of G4TechTV's: The Screen Savers. On July 16, the TSS crew will be moving to their new set in LA. Patrick and his wife-to-be have chosen to stay in the Bay Area rather than make the move to LA. No word on who will be replacing Patrick as co-host.

G4 TechTV has approximately 20 new pre-recorded episodes with Patrick as co-host that will be aired over the next few weeks.
