The Office is Restless this Morning

Sometimes this is really funny, and I just sit and listen to it. Other days, I have to crank up the iPod to block it out. Today the former case is true.

I had a great day at work yesterday. The EBM app is coming along nicely. So I don't have to push so hard. So I drink my coffee and listen to the natives.

My wife and kids and I were driving to the new St. Johns Town Center Mall on Saturday at around 5:30 pm. We were on JTB heading east, and we saw this truck in the off-ramp before Gate Parkway. The truck was engulfed in flames, and as we passed we saw several explosions as if there were perhaps some combustible materials in the bed or something. My wife grabbed the camera and snapped the pictures.

March Madness

Well, I finally made it through my March obligations. This month was pretty insane. I had an obligation every weekend this month. Between UTA, Bike Week, and the Men's Retreat I have had much time to just relax.

The retreat was awesome. I played paintball; I went down a zipline off the side of a mountain. Great stuff.

Yesterday I met with the Maintenance Officers at the 125th. I'm really satisfied with how it went. I think I did a great job describing the type of man that I am now, as well as the man I want to be. Even though this is just my "weekend job" it's still very important to me. If I get this position, I think it will be a great opportunity to grow.

In a few weeks I leave for Tampa to interview for the comm officer postions down there.

I'm gonna make it through this year ... if it kills me

The Mountain Goats released The Dilaudid EP today. It's only £3. (that 3 GBP or about 5.60 USD)

The tracklisting is :

1. Dilaudid
2. This Year
3. Collapsing Stars
4. Dilaudid (Marrtronix Version)

The EP is available as a download ONLY. It comes with v23-designed artwork and is available in both MP3 and AAC formats. I think it's awesome that they're willing to sell you music with out DRM. The songs are in MP3 or unprotected aac. The album art work is enbeded in the files as well as 2 pdfs.

I really like "This Year." Well worth the £3. I can't wait for the full release of the ablum next month.

Duhamel wins his 5th Daytona 200

I went to Daytona today. I saw the 15 lap superbike (1000cc) race, and the 68 lap Daytona 200 (600cc Formula XTreme).

"It feels great winning five," DuHamel commented after race. "This year it felt like the Daytona 255. It seemed like it would never end. Its amazing to have a bike thats as early in its development as the 600 Xtreme is and do 200 miles on that bike at 180mph. Its quite a testament to how Honda builds motorcycles -- for power and the long run.

Man I love Honda

Honda Tent
Originally uploaded by sizemoresr.
It's no secret that I'm a big time Honda fan. Growing up, every motorcycle I had was a Honda. In my adult life I continue to have great experiences with Honda. On Friday, my Dad and I rode down to Daytona. When we stopped for breakfast in St Augustine, I noticed that my back tire was looked really worn out. It was showing cord in several places, and I wasn't sure if I should ever attempt to ride on it. At that point I was sure that I would have to go back to Jacksonville.

We headed over to First City Honda in St Augustine, FL. Those guys couldn't have been any nicer. An hour and $200 later, they had me back on the road and headed to Daytona with a new Dunlop rear tire. Would the Harley shop been so accommodating?

My bike ran great all the way down to Daytona. No matter how fast I'm going, I can always twist the throttle and get more power. It's 919cc engine (from the CBR900RR) was built for the race track, and it likes to remind me of that.

Non-verbal communication

A friend of mine found this link on unspoken communication. It basically covers how to use nonverbal communication in the office to get your message across. I was surprised just how much of it I already use.

Be sure and read the comments for a good laugh. Like this one:

Another one that works is deliberately referring to them by the wrong name. Suddenly, "John" becomes "Mustafa".
Another one: ask a totally random question out of thin air. If they're complaining about lack of resources for their project, ask them if they think Annika Sorenstam will win the PGA this year. Or if Bounce is better than Downey fabric softener. If done seriously and with earnestness, your reputation for kookiness will explode.

Shuffle

You know it's really the little things in life. A few weeks ago, I downloaded and installed iPod Updater 2005-02-22. This gave my aging 3rd Gen iPod the shuffle feature found in newer 4th Gen iPods.

For those of you who don't know, shuffle is a feature that plays your music randomly. Instead of listening to music by Artist, Album, or Playlist, shuffle decides what you should listen to. It must have some kid of artificial intelligence or something, because it always seems to know what I want to here. Maybe it's looking at the artists that I've rated highly in iTunes.

This morning my iPod put together a nice mix of Mountain Goats, Against Me!, Interpol, Nirvana, and Archers of Loaf. I have close to 15GB of music on my iPod, some of which I have never heard, and I'm often plesently surprised by the tracks that 'randomly' come out of my iPod.

It's 8:00 am on Wednesday, and I don't want to be here, but at least the music is good, the coffee's hot, and I have a few minutes to right this. Thanks, pod.

update: who would have though that Jay-z -> Rancid -> Pixies would work? but it does.

My Favorite [Free] Things

-Mozilla Firefox
This is the best browser out there. I've been using Mozilla since I worked at Interlink in 1999. It's been my primary browser since 2002.

-office supplied coffee
Does it mean I'm addicted to caffine when I make statements like, "I really don't mind going to work. I can drink coffee and surf the internet there?"

-movabletype
This is the content management system I use for my weblog. It's pretty full featured and easy to use.

-Strongbad's weekly email

Updated most Monday's this email series has quickly become my favorite cartoon series. It's also sure to kill 5 minutes on Monday and might even cause me to laugh out lowd. I have a del.icio.us links tag for my favorites. (http://del.icio.us/sizemoresr/homestarrunner)

-podcasts
Even if you don't have an iPod, podcast are really cool. Podcasts are basically 'radio shows' that are distributed as mp3 files on the internet. I currently listen to the macCast and Leo's KFI airchecks.

-flickr
I just started using this durring the weekend. It's a great tool to share photo's on the internet. I'm currently using the free account, but will probably upgrade to the pro account.

-free wi fi
It seems to be almost everywhere these days. Panrea bread has it.

-delicious
Throughout the day I post links to del.icio.us. It allows me to visit that same page at a later date from another location.

-fedora core
I've been using redhat since version 6. Fedora core is the free version of the redhat linux distro. It looks awesome and is widely supported.

-gmail
Gmail is a free e-mail account. It gives you 1GB of storage space, and have a very powerfull search tool. I forward all of my personal emails to gmail. As well as notes to myself throughout the day. I kinda use it as a second brain. I can "ask" it thinks like "UTA Dates 2005" or "bikeweek 2005"

-gaim
I use gaim to sign it to my aim and msn im accounts. At work I use gaim more often than my desk phone.

I found this on the October 2004 edition of the flickr blog (blog.flickr.com). Flickr might be the best thing ever.

I'm thinking about upgrading to flickr pro. For $50 a year, you get 1 GB of uploads per month, with unlimited storage and bandwidth. I'm currently paying $100 a month for webhosting. This could be a nice supliment to my website. More later.

Also, I've found a ton of great photo's on flickr. Go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/sizemoresr/favorites/ to view my favorites.
