Late Christmas Present: My Treo finally works with my Prius

I'm currently using a Palm Treo 650 on Verizon. I've been pretty happy with the phone except for the fact that I could never pair it with my 2006 Toyota Prius over Bluetooth. Well, as of yesterday afternoon, all that changed. I was on Palm's site when I noticed that Palm and Verizon released a new firmware of the 650. Treo 650 Updater 1.05a overs a host of improvements: a new version of the Blazer Web Browser (4.3.2.1), better Bluetooth support for car kits (awesome), and E911 integration/improvements.

So yesterday, I spent the better part of an afternoon installing the new firmware. After doing all that, I was finally able to pair and place calls with my Prius. The only thing I needed to do was make an outgoing call when the prius was attempting to pair the the treo. After that everything worked great! I am able to sync my address book, make and receive calls, and see my signal strength on the multifuction display.

This adds some like to my aging Treo 650 I would like some additional internal memory and a better camera, but I can live with those things until Palm or Blackberry comes out with something a little more compelling on Verizon or even unlocked GSM. I would really like to see something running Palm OS (5 or even better 6) in the same form factor as the Treo 750v.

Last week I went to OKC for a meeting. This was probably the best trip to date. Our demo went off flawlessly. Plus it was good to spend some quality time with the EBM team. Life is good. I'm not sure when it happened, but I'm really content with everything right now. Job, house, family ... it's all good.

OKC

In a few minutes I'm going to leave for the airport. My flight to OKC is at 10:30, and I'll arrive in there at 3:00 pm local time. These trips are never easy, but I'm optimistic that things will go well and I'll end up having a good time. The main reason for this trip is to meet with the new E6-EBM IPT and work out the technical and funding issues for the new delivery order. That will happen tomorrow. I'll fly home on Wednesday.

For some reason trips to OKC are almost always preceded by a UTA weekend with the Florida Air National Guard. This weekend was exhausting. We had two formations, our annual awards and retirements and a change of command. Both are layered in so much formally and redundancy it's like watching paint dry. Oh well.

I'm staying at the Westin Hotel. I usually have internet access there, so expect more later.

I'm home

I had a great time in Iceland, but I'm really glad to be home. I'm on orders until August 9th. I'll be out at the 125th until Monday, and back to work at Anteon on Tuesday.

Here are the pictures I took:

Trip to Vic
Golden Circle Tour
Reykjavik

If you can't tell from the pictures, Iceland in July is absolutely beautiful. I got off the base as much as I could, and I'm really glad I did.

I also had three weeks away from my family and my civilian job, which gave me tons of time to think about things. Bottom line is I'm really happy with my life right now, I like my job, my family, and everything else I’ve been blessed with. I'm 26 years old with two great kids, an awesome wife, a computer information science degree, and a Honda 919. How much better can my life get?

I'm looking forward to the future. I'll use everything I've done and everything I've learned in the past 7 years to get to the next level.

Also of interest: 7 years ago today I graduated basic military training as an Airman First Class (E-3) at Lackland AFB, TX.

Last days in Iceland

Today is my last day of work in Iceland. I'll leave Keflavik soon. It's been a great trip.

Six more days in Iceland

I leave here on Saturday morning. This Iceland trip has been awesome, but I've been ready to go home for about a week now. On Saturday we went to Reykjavik, Iceland which was really fun. That means I've seen everything I wanted to see here. I'll probably just take it easy these next few days. I'm looking forward to seeing my family on Saturday night!

I guess it couldn't last

Yesterday the weather here took a turn for the worse. It’s been awesome since I got here, but it looks like its going to get pretty bad over the next few days. Right now it’s rainy and windy with 50 mph gusts! It really sucks when it rains sideways and hits you in the face. So I guys this is the Iceland everyone warned me about.

Update #1: Looks like its clearing up
Update #2: Raining
Update #3: Looks like its clearing up again
Update #4: I give up ... Iceland

Work Stuff

The pace at work has finally slowed down. Like I expected, it was really busy for the first few days, but now that almost everything's up and running, I have more time to relax.

The only open issue I have is with the local NCC to allow access to our VPN server. The firewall guys need to open a few ports. That should be done today, and then we'll be in great shape.

Iceland

I made it to Iceland Sunday at 2:00 pm local time (+4), after 6.5 hours in a C-17.

So far this trip has been great. The weather stays around 60 degrees all day. I left the base Sunday evening and saw Keflavik (the town just outside the gate). Iceland is pretty cool really. The locals here are really nice, especially when they find out you're an American in the military. I think Iceland is one of the few places where people like us.

I've stayed pretty busy here at work, but I feel it starting to ease up. It hasn't been too bad. I have to coordinate everything with the Air Force here, which gets old pretty fast!

I'm still not sleeping right. I woke up at 5:30 am on Saturday, and stayed up pretty much non stop until 2:00 am local time on Monday. Between the time change, the flight, and 24 hour daylight, I've kinda lost any sense of time. Hopefully, I can get caught up on my sleep this week.

I plan doing some extensive traveling this weekend. I'll post some pictures soon.

Disney Vacation

The Star Tours Ride at MGM
The Star Tours Ride at MGM

Tomorrow Michele and I are taking a three day vacation to Disney World. We're looking forward to spending some time together and celebrating my recent graduation.

This will also give me a chance to unwind before my trip to OKC next week. Scott and I are heading out to Tinker AFB to deploy the E6-EPM database next week. It's been a long project, I'm very proud of the work we did. I'm looking forward to see our application used by the Fleet, and moving on to the next stage of development.

Returned from 3.0 Off Site Meeting at Palm Coast, FL

This was the view from my hotel room.

I had a great time in Palm Coast. I attended the 3.0 (Logistics) Off Site meeting. Basically the 1st, 2nd and 3rd level supervisors all get together semiannually to discuss management issues off site. This allows the management team to spend a lot of "quality" time together in a setting free of the normal distractions of "the office."

I was ready to go because on Tuesday, I had all the distractions I could take!

OKC - Complete Success

DSC00591.jpg DSC00602.jpg
Aside from getting hopelessly lost almost every day, this trip was fun. Scott and I ate lots of steak. Also, I guess its worth mentioning that we got the funds to complete the E-6 EPM and ISPM web apps. What the hell and I talking about? I dunno, but I explained in in 3 slides in powerpoint.
